This beautifully hand crafted 18th century atlas armillary represents a mix of early science and Greek mythology. Atlas was a legendary Titan that battled Zeus. After his defeat, Atlas was sentenced to carry the Earth on his mighty shoulders until the end of time. This armillary dial features Atlas carrying the entire known Renaissance universe when the earth was still believed to be at its center. Gracefully intertwined brass and chrome rings symbolize the position and trajectories of heavenly bodies around the earth. This item is in all aspects ethereal; science combined with beauty and myth combined with historic fact. The polished base is made of heavyweight granite, the Atlas statue is made of cast aluminum, and the brass rings are aged to a bronze finish.
